The sun is out and exams are over, so what better way to celebrate than with a big weekend‒long festival? The good news is that you don't have to drain your bank account heading to Reading or Bestival when there are plenty on your doorstep in Newcastle. With so many to choose from here are the top two you can't miss.

Best Small Festival: Lindis Farne Festival , 31st August-3rd September

With 100 different acts performing across 7 different stages, this is one of the biggest and best music festivals happening in the North East. Headline acts include The View, The Fratellis and Norman Jane MBE. Still not convinced? In 2016 they were nominated for Best Small Festival (and Best Toilets) by the UK Festival Awards. Enough Said!

Nearest to Urban Study: Summertyne Americana Festival, 21-23 July

If you are looking for something slightly more niche, this is the ultimate feel‒good festival celebrating the finest of American Folk music right in the city centre in a chilled‒out and welcoming atmosphere. This year's lineup features established country stars like The Shires and William Bell alongside up and coming artists like Sarah Darling and Savoy Family Cajun Band. Why not get dressed up? Shortest Wait: The Hoppings Funfair, 16th-24th June

If big music events really aren't your thing but you still want to soak up the sun then you're in luck. For over 100 years Newcastle has welcomed the world's largest funfair. With over 300 rides and attractions there is something for everyone, whether you are an adrenaline junky or a scaredy‒cat.

Best Big Festival: Leeds, 25-27th August

There are a few tickets still up for grabs at this year's Leeds festival if you are looking for a larger event. Having teamed up with Reading, it's your chance to see big‒name acts like Eminem, Muse and Korn across 7 stages. Tickets are running out fast so book now.
